EVOLUTION FROM TRADITION
For dozens of years, I have been folding what I would call “traditional origami” where only a single square is used and the folds follow common geometries and references through out. These vases are a departure from that, using much thicker paper and a simple structure. Utilizing reverse folds, where the direction of the pleats are inverted to introduce angles, the vases can take on an enormous variety of shapes. Further technique introduces geometric details and patterns.
CONTRAST IS KEY
To further enhance the beautiful texture of the paper, each Pleated Vase is dry brushed with metallic acrylic paint. Dry brushing involves brushing a very light coat of paint onto a textured surface where only the high spots are painted. This preserves the texture of the material but enhances the contrast between the paint and the substrate. The effect gives the appearance of age and weathering, where the vases take on an antiquated look.
