INSPIRED BY MUSIC

SHAPED BY NATURE

FOR THE RECORD

Music powers The Grain Mill. Even if the saws are still, the lathe is off, and the hand planes are stowed, the shop is still buzzing with the sound of music. Waveforms take their shape from the drying process of the wood, leading to undulations similar to sound waves; a natural synergy of timber and tone. Further detail on the rim mimics the grooves found in vinyl records, added through intentionally course sanding.

FOR THE TABLE

Meant to be a statement piece on a dining or coffee table, each Waveform, at its heart, is a bowl. Each bowl is turned smooth, maintaining an organic and fluid curve. They are then sanded to 220 grit for a satin smooth finish and coated in a food safe hardwax oil. While the bowls do stabilize at their center, they are completely rounded and therefore wobble freely when rocked.

SETTING THE TONE

  • APPLE WOOD

Locally sourced Apple Wood boasts sharp contrast and wavy patterns in the grain. Expect deep red and orange tones through the heartwood and soft tans in the sapwood. Due to the hardness of Apple Wood it often cracks as it begins the drying process and the wood starts to move. In some cases these cracks end up closing themselves.

  • BOX ELDER

Often featureless Box Elder Waveforms gain their appeal from the exaggerated movement of the rim. The softness of the wood allows for dramatic undulations with lower risk of cracking. This locally sourced Elder Wood is a uniform yellow color with occasional figuring and chatoyance that add to the waves.

  • Oxidized BOX ELDER

To boost the contrast of the Box Elder Waveforms, the rim is treated with an iron oxide solution. Unlike stains which add pigment to the wood fibers, oxidation chemically alters the structure leading to a richer, more stable color. It also further emphasizes the figure in the grain.
