Pyxis Cup
The Pyxis is typically a lidded cylindrical box, but its shape, size, and general aesthetic lended itself well to a cup-like form. Unlike most Grecian pottery made from terracotta, the Pyxis is a wooden vessel made from the Boxwood (puksos) tree. They date back to the 5th and 6th centuries BC, usually holding cosmetics, trinkets, jewelry, and sometimes even medicines. The whimsical ringed handles echo the natural void present on the body of the cup and the striking patination coalesce into a charming, small form.
